The bed-sharing method popular in Scandinavian countries like Denmark and Sweden is helping couples get better sleep

While sharing a bed is kind of a major part of being married, it’s not that simple for some couples, especially if they have different sleep routines or needs. For couples who like to sleep at different times or temperatures, who toss and turn, who snore, or who hog the covers, sharing a bed can mean struggling to get a healthy night of rest. And without good rest, maintaining a relationship with your spouse (let alone performing at your job, raising your kids, and doing all that other stuff adults have to do) gets so much harder. That’s where the Scandinavian sleep method comes in.

This is a hack that some couples absolutely swear by. It’s called the Scandinavian method because you’ll commonly see couples doing this in northern European countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. But it’s surprisingly simple: Couples just ditch their top sheet, and then instead of using one big duvet, they use two smaller ones, one for each person in the bed. This gives each person the ability to control their own sleeping temperature, sleep in the position they want, wrap themselves up, and rest without worrying about pulling the blankets off their partner.

The Scandinavian method has gone viral on TikTok as couples all over the world have begun to embrace it.

One person who shared her Scandinavian bedroom makeover is Erica Dowdy, who wrote that the Scandinavian sleep method is “an absolute game changer.”

She explained that she decided to make over her and her husband’s space after they took several trips to Copenhagen and always slept well while visiting.

“In Copenhagen, not once have I slept with one duvet,” she explained. “It’s always two twins, and we sleep so good. No one’s fighting over blankets. No one’s too hot or too cold. It’s absolutely amazing… This is the comfiest way to sleep. It could save marriages.”

Sleeping in separate rooms? Not anymore.
